UWSOM Diversity Visiting Medical Student Opportunities

The University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM) recognizes the importance of diversity for maintaining excellence in its teaching, patient care and research programs. To increase the representation of medical students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in its residency training programs, the Departments of Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry and Radiology is offering funded visiting sub-internships for medical students in their fourth year. These programs offer fourth year students from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to experience graduate medical education at the University of Washington prior to choosing where to go for their residency.

Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA):

APAMSA is a national organization that aims to address the unique health challenges of APA communities through education, outreach, advocacy, and service. UW APAMSA’s goals are to educate health sciences students on health issues affecting the APA community in Seattle and in the WWAMI region so we may provide culturally-effective care for APA patients; provide opportunities for students to connect with the APA community through service, partnership, and outreach; and promote mentorship and networking among students and APA physicians.




Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA):

LMSA is a network of students, alumni and health professionals whose mission is to promote the development of Latino students through educational, volunteer, professional & networking opportunities to foster diversity, higher education, and the improvement of the Latino community. Email:

Medicine Wheel Society (MWS):

MWS is a social network among American Indian/Alaska Native medical students, other health profession students, alumni, faculty and friends. Its primary purpose is to provide means by which AI/AN health professionals associated with the UW can interact to provide a support network for AI/AN medical school students. Email:


The mission of the Queer Medical Student Association (QMed) is to provide education & information to the medical community and all who are interested in healthcare issues concerning the Queer (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, etc.) population. We will strive to ensure a welcoming, respectful and safe academic environment for Queer students at the UW Medical School. We are also committed to supporting a diverse community on campus and will provide resources and support for Queer students. We are a group of students that are both queer and straight allies that believe in the importance of equality in healthcare for all people. Email:

Student National Medical Association (SNMA):

The SNMA commits to the empowerment of its members to take proactive steps to address minority health issues through advocacy and community service. As such, SNMA works to promote the professional development of its members, so that they may have the potential for being the underrepresented minority (URM) health leaders of tomorrow. Email:

Alliance for Equal Representation in Medicine (AFERM):

AFERM is a University of Washington School of Medicine student organization dedicated to improving the diversity in medical education and providing culturally competent and representative future physicians.

Health Equity Circle (HEC)

HEC is an interdisciplinary organization of University of Washington students and community members that recognize health as a physical, mental and social state. The mission of HEC is to bring students and community members together to educate about health equity and issues and taking action through developing relationships on campus and in the larger community.
